Interpreting My Dream February 10, 2009

I was taking Benadryl and fell asleep. When I fell asleep, I dreamed that 1.) I had forgotten to read Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead and 2.) Someone else was having a wedding or something, but that my friends and I were eating shroomy M&Ms in this picture of a place that I saw on the internet when I was looking for cool places to visit while I’m in Amsterdam this summer.

So, I decided to Google ‘dream meanings’ and find the dumbest interpretation of my dreams that I could. I’ve found alot of interpretations for what reading a book means, but none for what not reading a book means. So, I’ll just assume that it means the opposite of what reading a book means. Yeah.

Dream 1: dreammoods.com says: “To see books in your dream, indicates calmness. You are moving toward your goals at a slow and steady pace. Books also symbolize knowledge, intellect, information and wisdom. ” So I will interpret Dream 1 as meaning that I am not calm, that I am not moving towards my goals at a slow and steady pace, and that I have no knowledge, intellect, information, or wisdom.

Dream 2: M&Ms: dreammoods.com says: “To see or eat candy in your dream, symbolizes the joys and special treats in life. It also represents indulgence, sensuality and/or forbidden pleasure. “ Wedding: “To see a marriage in your dream, signifies commitment, harmony or transitional period. You are undergoing an important developmental phase in your life. The dream may also represent the unification of formerly separate or opposite aspects of yourself.” Shrooms: Dream Interpretation Dictionary says: “To see mushrooms in your dreams, denotes unhealthy desires, and unwise haste in amassing wealth, as it may vanish in law suits and vain pleasures. To eat them, signifies humiliation and disgraceful love. For a young woman to dream of them, foretells her defiance of propriety in her pursuit of foolish pleasures.”

So, I guess I should interpret this as meaning that um…wait…what?

Hey, everybody! Go see Coraline. It’s awesome!

Bill and I went yesterday and saw it in 3-D and everything. The visuals look incredible and it has a great storyline that can be interpreted in many different ways. The score is also interesting, for all those soundtrack nerds out there. Though it is animated, it is definitely not a kid’s movie exclusively,  because of the variety of meanings, etc. One thing I didn’t understand is that the audience didn’t seem to follow most of the funny parts. Bill and I would be totally guffawing and everyone else would be staring mindlessly at the screen, kind of like when you watch one of those “Don’t Smoke Weed” commercials in the theatre and no one seems to get the funniness except you. Staring mindlessly…this brings me to my interpretations of the story (a story by none other than the great Neil Gaiman).

Those familiar with Mew might recognize this line from “The Saviours of Jazz Ballet:” ‘Hollow hearts make for pleasant lives.’ One of the interpretations that I brought away from the movie is the idea of put-on blind optimism being an easier, but fake way of living. Had Coraline sewed the buttons on her eyes and taken away her true vision, she could have lived in the perfect world forever, but instead she looked for herself and saw that the perfect world was incomplete, cruel, and meaningless.

I don’t usually like 3D that much, but the depth added to the visuals was pretty awesome. There weren’t very many instances of , you know, Disney World, stuff jumping into your face 3D. I consider the lack of obnoxious 3D trickery to be a good thing, though. Coraline also had one of the best opening title sequences I’ve ever seen. Even the opening title sequence has meaning to the story once you look back, even though at first it seems just like a very good simple illustration of the idea of reincarnation. The creativity behind this movie is evident in the many trippy moments, where you’re all like “whooooooooa. duuuuuuude.”

Trippiness Rating: 9 Yeah, it’s pretty trippy in places.

Visuals: 9.5 Awesome.

Story: 10 Go see it.

The Epic Saga of My Lost Piano Recording February 7, 2009

Earlier tonight, I decided to record a piano jam that had been in my head for a while. I recorded it, and ended up with a pretty sweet six minute, minimalist extravaganza. After that, I fell asleep for a while, and then I started burning incense in this room. I started watching the little beams of smoke rise up and twist around together before expanding and curling in multiple dimensions at once, criss-crossing and spinning around the little beams that had risen up before and dispersed. I started moving my hand through the smoke and watching the track behind it as it moved. While doing this, I was listening to my piano piece. It was beginning to build and build to the loudest, fastest part, and the smoke appear to be getting closer and spinning more furiously as it dispersed through the air and started looking even trippier. Then, all of a sudden, the power went out. It was completely dark and only a little orange glow came from the incense. Well, long story short, my entire 6 minute piano piece was erased because my computer had turned off (I had recorded it on GarageBand). Now, I guess I’m going to have to do it all over again. So lame, especially considering that I made most of it up as I went.
